Bullets Tear Down Nets With Accurate Shooting Against Woeful Opponent

11 April 1997. Washington Bullets 109, New Jersey Nets 90 (record: 40-37)
Game leaders: Howard (21 points), Webber (8 rebounds), Strickland (15 assists)0uch for New Jersey. They couldn't buy a shot in this game. Yes, they got 28 offensive rebounds, but they had to shoot an atrocious 36.0% (36 of 100) from the field to get that. They also gave up 25 points off 18 turnovers.
With that, the Bullets cruised to victory.
Growing Up Each Game Growing up can be hard to do, especially for a young team. They lose some maddening games, all in the hopes of making the playoffs. Washington Post sports columnist Michael Wilbon looks at the Bullets progression and short-term needs. They were definitely helped by being fresh, having had two nominal rest days (even with Thursday's practice) to get their game legs back. All five starters, plus Tracy Murray, scored in double figures and shot at least 50% from the field. And the fourth quarter, with the Bullets often up by at least 20 points, was an extremely ugly affair, as bench players for both sides took turns looking bad.
The Nets were without a point guard, as Sam Cassell was out with a strained hamstring. So the Bullets often trapped the ballhandler near halfcourt and generated a few turnovers with that method. They outscored the Nets 36-14 in the third quarter. Strickland had 9 assists in the first quarter alone.
New Game Time Friday's game start has been changed. TNT will be broadcasting the Bullets/Magic game nationwide, starting at 8 pm EDT. The local coverage has been switched to WB-50. This was a refreshing loss, especially considering the losses at Minnesota and Toronto during the previous week. This win put the Bullets a game ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who inexplicably lost to the Boston Celtics in overtime that same night.
