Preseason's Over - Who's Left Standing?
|
That's a good question. With Cheaney, Ham, and Legler all getting injured recently, the Wizards have been fielding the remnants of a MASH unit, it seems. They're starting to make the final cuts, which are due at 6pm today.Which makes it all the more surprising that they chose to bring in veteran Terry Davis this past weekend, after all of the preseason games were finished. He's a big body, but not much of a scorer. He didn't even play in the NBA last year, as he was recovering from an injury. However, he's a Virginia native and Ben Wallace played with him some this off-season and told GM Wes Unseld that he believed that Davis has recovered and could play in the NBA.
Which is very interesting, because if Davis is to stay on the roster, it's likely that Wallace may have to be cut (or put on IR). More info on this tomorrow.
What we do know is that both Muresan and Legler are almost sure to be put on IR today. That means that 3 roster spots are available, and it's likely that Darvin Ham, Jimmy Oliver, and God Shammgod will be kept. Ham almost definitely will be a major part of the regular season rotation (he was regularly the first power player off the bench for the Wizards), and Oliver may get heavy minutes in Legler's spot. Shammgod might get spot duty, especially if Strickland's hamstring gives him problems. Juwan Howard and Rod Strickland are both aiming to be able to play Friday night against the Pistons, so hopefully the roster can become a little more settled.
The Wizards started cutting their roster by releasing Chuck Kornegay and Amal McCaskill last night. More to come - stay tuned.
