No Fancy Draft Plans For The Wizards This Year, But What About A Trade?
|
The Wizards are setting the record straight: they will not trade to get into the first round of this draft. As general manager Wes Unseld said: "I would have to give up a first-round player, and I'm not going to do that for a pick in this draft."Good for him. However, there's more to this story than just that (see the full story, by J.A. Adande, in the Washington Post).
Where it's gets interesting is in the trade speculation. The Wizards are supposedly considering a trade of CWebb for Kemp, though Unseld denies it. (This is reported on ESPNet Sportszone, although you have to be a subscriber to read the article.) Almost any way you slice it, this would be a bad deal for the Wizards. Remember, though, Bickerstaff was responsible for drafting Kemp in Seattle.
Another rumor, as is being reported by David Aldridge of ESPN (and former Bullets beat writer for the Post) is that the Wizards would trade Gheorghe Muresan for Jayson Williams, of the New Jersey Nets. This is more intriguing, and I'd be seriously tempted by it. You give up size, but get more mobility, defense, and rebounding. He's a serious rebounder, in the Dennis Rodman category (similar rebounds per minute average).
I'd picture Williams starting at center for the Wizards in this scenario, as he did for the Nets much of last season (before his thumb injury). He can also play power forward, but the Wizards have plenty of those. He's tall 6'11", with long arms and an active body. Not a huge shotblocker, but he does work hard.
It could be a very interesting off-season, indeed.
