Rookie Continues Individual Record-Setting As Bullets Seek Team Accomplishments

14 April 1997. Washington Bullets 131, Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers 110 (record: 41-38)
Game leaders: Webber, Howard (27 points), Webber (21 rebounds), Whitney (9 assists)On one side of the court was a team chasing a playoff spot. On the other side of the court was a team that is currently defined by a singular individual, who had scored 40 or more points in 4 straight game. All of which that team had lost.
The Bullets had trouble early, as Iverson started red-hot and scored 15 of his team's first quarter points. But he cooled off, and the Bullets used that chance to pull away. Iverson eventually got his 40 points in the game, but it took a Philly foul, three timeouts, and an unguarded 3-pointer (after the final timeout) in the final 61 seconds to get Iverson there.
Webber tied his career-high of 21 rebounds. The Bullets got four players with at least 20 points (Webber, Howard, Strickland (20), Murray (20)). Webber had 7 assists, and Howard and Strickland each had 6 assists.
The biggest negative was that the Bullets allowed their 15 turnovers to be converted into 25 Philly points. This cannot happen in the playoffs.
Muresan did not play in this game, having strained his back during the morning practice. He could be out a few more games while resting the injury. Also, Tim Legler sat out with a stomach virus. But these missing players were not enough to derail the Bullets in the end.
This win, combined with Cleveland's loss to Charlotte last night, puts the Bullets 1 game ahead of the Cavaliers for the final playoff spot. (The Orlando Magic clinched the 7th playoff spot last night with a victory over Detroit.) The Indiana Pacers are looming 2 games behind the Bullets and come to Landover tomorrow to face the Bullets. A loss by the Pacers eliminates them from the playoff race. Should be a good one.
