Bullets Love This Valentine's Result - Bernie Is A Big Winner

14 February 1997. Washington Bullets 125, New Jersey Nets 107 (record: 23-26)
Game leaders: Howard (25 points), Williams (8 rebounds), Strickland (10 assists)The Bullets finally net a win - their first in 5 games. This was almost getting hopeless, it seems. At least Bernie now has his first win as coach of the Bullets. And what a win - a season high in points scored, and everyone got involved in the game. The Bullets showed one thing in particular that makes winning teams successful - as Bickerstaff put it, "effort."
Before the game, the Bullets activated backup center Lorenzo Williams. They placed Ben Wallace on the injured list with tendinitis in the left patella (i.e., kneecap). And Williams played well, with 13 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. The Bullets also got 22 points from Cheaney, 19 points from Strickland, and 14 points from Muresan, all welcome additions with CWebb on the bench with a strained back.
The Bullets went 34 of 40 from the free throw line (is this how good they get when there isn't a shooting guru on the bench?) and outrebounded, 40-27, the normally strong rebounding Nets (+1.8 rpg as of 2/17). If the Bullets can put out this type of effort every game, they'd be a lot more successful. Of course, giving up 107 points is not something to be proud of, either.
