A Second Faceoff With The Spurs Yields Similar Results

16 October 1997. San Antonio Spurs 96, Washington Wizards 76 (preseason record: 0-2)
Game leaders: Cheaney (12 points), Grant, Williams (7 rebounds), Strickland (13 assists)I don't think the team wants to remember this game. The first-team players kept the game close, but when the second-unit team entered, it was over before it started.
The Wizards opened with their trapping defense, built around CWebb and his long arms, and raced to 21-8 lead in the first on the back of 6 San Antonio turnovers. Unfortunately, they only forced 7 more turnovers the rest of the game.
CWebb Is "Center" Of Attention Bickerstaff doesn't intend to play CWebb as a true center, but rather use his unique physical size and abilities to institute a trapping defensive style, say Ric Bucher of the Washington Post. Should be interesting to watch. Down 4 points at halftime, the starters were then able to tie the game at 50, only to watch San Antonio run away the rest of the game, getting outscored 46 to 26 the rest of the way. Blech.
Some bad points stand out. Shammgod had 5 turnovers (with 5 assists) in 17 minutes of play, while Tracy Murray shot an abysmal 2 of 12 from the field. Calbert Cheaney is also 0-fer from the free throw line, going 0 for 5 in two preseason games so far.
Their third preseason game is tonight, at Denver. Should be an up-and-down race on the court.
