Extinction Is Too Kind A Word To Describe The Raptors Tonight

28 March 1997. Washington Bullets 113, Toronto Raptors 86 (record: 35-35)
Game leaders: Webber (24 points), Webber (10 rebounds), Strickland (9 assists)Back to .500. It's taken the Bullets a while (over 2 months), but they finally have their record back to .500, with 12 games remaining in the season. Even better, with tonight's loss by Cleveland, the Bullets are within 1 game of the 8th spot in the playoffs. Unfortunately, Indiana remains a game behind.
I arrived late to this game. The first quarter was just beyond half over, and I hadn't listened to it on the radio coming in. Imagine my surprise when I saw the scoreboard and it read: Bullets 27, Toronto 7.
Playoff Fever Strikes Washington While the Bullets players can smell their playoff opportunites getting closer, Washington Post sports columnist Thomas Boswell notes that both of owner Abe Pollin's franchises (basketball and hockey) are trying to make the playoffs with late season pushes. That's not a misprint. And the Raptors never led from then on. Yeah, they made it close, but the Bullets also made it embarassing at times. They led by as much as 32 points in the fourth quarter.
The Bullets got 34 points (!) off 22 Toronto turnovers. Rod Strickland had 16 points and 9 assists in only 24 minutes. Juwan had 22 points, and CWebb shot 9 of 10 from the field (24 points, 10 rebounds), in addition to 5 assists and 3 blocks. Cheaney had 7 rebounds with his 14 points. The Bullets played all 12 players, and everyone scored.
IMO, Toronto's lone bright spot was bench player Reggie Slater, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds (7 offensive) in 31 minutes. Unfortunately, he was 0 for 5 from the free throw line.
